One Innovation By Design entrant is Hello Compost, a proposed program in which low-income families will be able exchange compost for produce credits.

“We need to re-imagine the role of food waste from being a smelly, unattractive side effect of eating to an attractive resource for residents to positively impact their community and to help put fresh food on the table,” says cofounder Aly Blenkin.

Sowing Season

It’s beginning. The greens have been put into the ground, a pinch at a time, a pinch of soil deep.

We’ve set them on shelves right by the glass in a tall window.

Green and growing, they’ll put color in the winter garden once again.

You can grow paperwhite flowers in the winter!
Keep them in a dark, well-ventilated place for two weeks or until the shoots start to extend and roots take hold.
Then put them in a sunny spot; the plants will think it’s spring and start to bloom!

"The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul."

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

said John as a bunch of students, crying out with triumph, covered to the elbows in dirt, pulled down the last of the inner fence. The garden has officially expanded. Hear, hear!

I got stung in the face with a honeybee today.

That’s what I get for dancing around with a shovel.

Another one got my friend Tait with a head shot - straight to the temple.

The bees mean business. Don’t mess with the hive. Don’t mess.

But we’re just happy they’re out and about after all the cold days. I’d be cranky too if I was a bee.
